As a music teacher, I’ve always been passionate about introducing children to the wonders of music. One of the best ways to do this is through storytelling. Children’s books about music not only entertain, but also inspire kids to appreciate and engage with music in meaningful ways. Here are some of our favourite books about music that make us smile, laugh, and sing along, and have been requested over and over and over again, on repeat!
Music for Mister Moon by Philip C. Stead
This book follows a young girl named Harriet who loves playing her cello, but prefers to play alone in her room. One night, while practicing her cello, she accidentally knocks the moon out of the sky. I love the pure imagination in this story!
The Diddle That Dummed
by Kes Gray and Fred Blunt
This one always gets us giggling about the diddle (eighth notes) who keeps dumming (like a quarter note). You and your kids will be reciting the rhythms and laughing together.
The Man with the Violin by Kathy Stinson
This book is inspired by a real event featuring violinist, Joshua Bell. The story emphasizes noticing beauty in everyday life and the power of music.
Never Play Music Right Next to the Zoo
by John Lithgow
This is a quite humorous book about a boy who falls asleep at a concert and dreams that the zoo animals take over the orchestra.
Because by Mo Willems
Mo Willems is always a good idea, but this is a very sweet book about how a series of small events lead a girl to fall in love with music. The story shows how one action can inspire others.
Trombone Shorty by Troy Andrews
This book is about the author’s own childhood in New Orleans. It highlights the power of perseverance and community.
Giraffes Can’t Dance by Giles Andreae & Guy Parker-Rees
This was always a preschool music favourite over here. It’s about Gerald, a clumsy giraffe who thinks he can’t dance, but with some encouragement and the right music, Gerald discovers he really can dance. The story celebrates individuality, confidence, and finding your own rhythm.
Cows in the Kitchen
This was one of our favourite sing alongs from the kids’ youngest years – ours is very well-loved!!
Happy Reading (& Singing)!
