We have our favourite kid books about music, which is my jam. So now, let’s get to my husband’s jam, which just so happens to be my son’s most requested books (alongside books about anything that goes!). As always, these are in no particular order.
Brady Brady Superstar Hockey Collection by Mary Shaw
When we were looking for more hockey books, we were told endlessly about Brady-Brady-this and Brady-Brady-that. So, I figured, we may as well invest in a full Brady Brady Collection. It’s perfect for my hockey-loving kids! The characters are fun, the stories are cute, and they all have a cozy close-to-home feeling to them.
Z is for Zamboni: A Hockey Alphabet by Matt Napier
A classic alphabet book, but one that covers all the hockey bases! This is also a perfect board book for younger kids.
Goodnight Hockey by Michael Dahl
One of those books that my son literally went to bed with. Short, easy, cozy little read, that is also great for a young reader in board book fashion.
Puckster’s First Hockey Game by Lorna Schultz Nicholson [the whole Puckster series]
You’ve without a doubt heard me talk about, seen me reading, or passed in one of my other blog posts, Puckster! We love alllll the Puckster books. And bonus points, because they are written by a wonderful human, who has now helped me learn a thing or two about hockey, while I read these to my kids with joy over and over and over again, to the point that the pages are quite literally falling apart.
Lucy Tries Hockey by Lisa Bowes
We adore all the Lucy Tries books by a lovely Calgary-based author, Lisa Bowes. Lucy Tries Hockey is no exception.
I Can Play Too by Cammi Granato
Cammi Granato is a former American hockey player herself. This book has been read about 10 thousand times in our house, with our son always asking for “Mimi” and naming all of her many siblings and parents and dog…you’ll know which part I’m talking about when you get the book. Luckily, it’s a fun read to read 10 thousand times over.
The Moccasin Goalie by William Brownridge
Even though this one was new to us over the last year, as the cover tells you, it’s a classic. I love the small-town hockey vibes and the story of celebrating differences and accepting those differences on the ice. Plus, there’s some heartwarming friendships in this one.
Hockey is My Favorite Season by Rayne Makin
I came across this book because the author is a fellow Alberta girl now living in Seattle, living the hockey life. What I find really sweet about this book that none of the other ones have is the main character being a hockey fan and spectator! It follows that hockey day energy we so often feel in our house.
Happy Hockey Reading!
