Some of Our Favourite Board Books for Babies/Toddlers

Reading with kids has always been one of my favourite things, whether it be with my preschool students, my nieces and nephews, or my daughter. I love cozying up, spending that focused quality time together, and seeing the wonder in their faces and hearing all the thoughts that escape them. Sometimes C will continue to crawl around as I read, but then she will crawl on over and check out a page, and then carry on. Either way, exploring the written word together (and a beautiful illustration) will always be near and dear to my heart. I wanted to share some of our favourite board books so far!

A Cozy Good Night by Linda Ashman

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin, John Archambault

Giraffes Can’t Dance by Giles Andreae

Ten Little Fingers and Ten Little Toes by Mem Fox

Wish by Matthew Cordell

I am Canada by Heather Patterson

ABC Mindful Me by Christiane Engel

I also want to point out that we love touch and feel books right now, for example, Never Touch a Dinosaur. The classic Dada book actually makes C laugh with all it’s animals sounds, and the Mama one is great for adding in some simple words! Anything by Sandra Boynton is always great and C goes to grab But Not the Hippopotamus every single time. Anything from the Little People, Big Dreams series rocks our world. Lastly, C is a pisces, so we find Dear Little Pisces to be so sweet, but you could look at which ever book is specific to the child you are gifting to!

Happy Reading!

3 Parenting Ways I’m Keeping Around Post-Pandemi 3 Parenting Ways I’m Keeping Around Post-Pandemic:

1. Protecting my postpartum space. [Have you heard of the “lying-in” period? Yup...I’ll be purposely quarantining with future babies. If you want to bring us food...”Thank you so, so much! You can leave it at the door, and we will see you in two weeks.🤍”]

2. Going more intimate on holidays and with celebrations. [Y’all know I love to throw a party, but having more intimidate holidays and birthdays has actually been really nice. Feel free to call me out when I can actually throw a party again though, and I invite all of Calgary...]

3. Welcoming my kid(s) into my work space. [This has been something that has made me so happy, been really beneficial for little C to be a part of, and has allowed me to “skip” my maternity leave.]

I know people have been missing their parenting village, but have you found any parenting wins from this wild experience?
“The secret to unlocking the ancient patterns in “The secret to unlocking the ancient patterns in human growth lies not in what we do to our young children, but who we are to them.”

I was saying to J yesterday that when I was in Edmonton and working wild hours back and forth between YYC and YEG, I was never able to enjoy a spontaneous adventure with him when he got a surprise day off...even though we are still both working lots and often passing our sweet C back and forth, I beyond appreciate these moments we can sneak in!

“Practise makes progress.” Perfection is never “Practise makes progress.” Perfection is never what we’re looking for; progress is.

I’ve loved this saying for some time, and when I heard a parent say it to one of my students the other day, I nearly melted.

[Side note: This is what podcasting with C-bear looks like. Have you been hearing her chime in on our recent podcasts?]

What are you working on “progressing” at right now?
