We visited Maine in the dead of winter, and had a great time eating all the oysters and bundling up to walk in the snow, but everyone kept saying, “you need to come back in the summer!” I’m sure it would be absolutely beautiful in the summer. It reminded me a lot of Nova Scotia, if it’s okay to make that comparison. In the winter, lots of places, including restaurants, shut down, but we did not have a bad meal the entire time we were there! So enjoy, regardless of when you go!
Activities
We stayed at the Press Hotel, and it was a perfect stay – their gym has Peleton bikes (if that’s appealing to you), they have activity nights, and their bar at night often has live music! It’s also the perfect location for walking everywhere!
- Rent snow shoes from Portland Trails (or bring your own) and explore!
- Take the ferry to Peak’s Island in the summer; we did this in the winter and it was a ghost town
- Take a walk by the Portland Harbor
Some other activities:
- Head out to Mt. Abram
- Go ice fishing (or many more outdoor activities) through New England Outdoor Centre
- If lighthouses are your thing, Maine is a good place to be!
Now to the Food…
Restaurants
- Gritty’s – decent pub
- The Grill Room – get the oysters and brussel sprouts!
- Street & Co. – you should order anything that comes straight in the pan!!
- Becky’s Diner – we found this restaurant from the show Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives…get some clam chowder
- Fore Street – very cool vibe there
- Duck Fat – don’t skip the poutine!!
Other restaurants that we didn’t get a chance to try, but were researched or recommended:
- Central Provisions – small plates; closed in the winter months
- Robinson’s Wharf – get the lobster; closed in the winter months
- So many options for wineries and beer tastings!
Hope you eat as much fish and oysters as we did!!
